Step 1: Determine the purpose of the artwork

Before choosing a piece of art, it’s important to determine its purpose. A piece of art can be more than just decoration; it can make a statement, evoke a feeling, and even improve the acoustics of a room. Here are a few considerations to help you determine the purpose of your artwork:

  1. Statement of Harmony: Start by determining the intended purpose of the artwork. Consider whether you’re looking for a piece that will seamlessly integrate with the colors and mood of your interior, or whether you’d prefer a statement piece that contrasts with the surrounding space. 1. Functionality: In addition to aesthetics, a piece of art can also serve a functional purpose. Pieces of art of various sizes can have an impact on the acoustics, making them both decorative and functional. Step 3: Choose the size of the artwork

At Pieces of Art we understand that choosing the right size artwork is essential to creating the perfect atmosphere in your space. But how do you choose the right size?

The ideal size depends on several factors, including the size of your space, your personal taste, and the extent of the acoustic problem you want to solve.

Pieces of Art offers a variety of sizes to choose from:

  • Square: 60x60 cm
  • M: 60x80 cm
  • L: 40x120 cm
  • XL: 80x120 cm
  • XXL: 120x180 cm

How do you choose the right size?

Size of your space and your personal taste
  • For a small space or to add a subtle accent, the square size (60x60 cm) or size M (60x80 cm) are perfect. These sizes fit well in hallways, small rooms or as part of a gallery wall.
  • Do you have a larger wall to fill? Then choose size L (40x120 cm) or XL (80x120 cm). These elongated sizes fit well above sofas, dressers or in hallways and also offer considerable sound absorption.
  • For large spaces where you really want to make an impact while improving the acoustics, the XXL format (120x180 cm) is ideal. This size fills large empty walls perfectly and creates an impressive statement in any room, while also ensuring maximum sound absorption.

Not sure which size is best for your space? Use masking tape to outline different sizes on your wall and get a visual idea of what each size will look like.

Acoustic requirement

When choosing the right size artwork, it is important to consider the acoustics of your space. Are you experiencing reverberation or poor sound quality? Then an artwork with sound-absorbing properties can be an excellent solution.

Is your space large and your reverberation even larger? Then it is wise not to think too small and to opt for larger works of art and/or hang multiple works of art in the space that can absorb the sound. But sometimes 1 work of art can also do a lot. To give you an idea, here is the experience of Denise Kortlever who has a large space where the acoustics were far from optimal. Her problem was mainly in the kitchen, but it continues into the dining area and then the sitting area. To solve her acoustic problem, she first only hung the artwork Noah in her kitchen. Not enough to solve her entire acoustic problem. She also placed the artwork not super ideal in terms of acoustics (certainly in terms of looks!!), but this was her reaction:

'Well, the difference is really obvious! For the entire space we need a few more m2 felt, but it's just BIZARRE how much this one artwork makes a difference and how beautiful it looks. Really a great tip!'. According to Denise Kortlever.

So even though 1 piece of art in such a large space won't solve her entire acoustic problem, it has already helped her tremendously at home. If you have a smaller space, 1 piece of art might solve your entire acoustic problem. Read below about how to best choose your piece of art if you want to improve your acoustics

Step 4: Improve the acoustics of your room

To improve the acoustics in your room, it is good to take the following points into account:

- Discover the areas where the sound problems occur (most), such as echoes or noise pollution. The places where the most nuisance from the reverberation occurs are often the places with a lot of hard materials and where you come together with others. For example, the sitting area where you sit with friends or the dining area where you talk about the day as a family at the end of the day, but you also want the acoustics to be good at your workplace where you make a lot of phone calls. The places where the sound reflects the most will be the place where you will benefit most from your acoustic solution on the wall. So consider placing artwork in strategic places where sound absorption is needed.

- For optimal sound absorption, place artwork in areas where sound is reflected, such as opposite hard surfaces or in large open spaces. These may include walls opposite windows, concrete walls, or large open spaces with minimal furniture.

- The more felt artwork you hang in the room, the more sound absorption you will experience. Therefore, consider placing multiple artworks on different walls in the room.

- Choose the size of the artwork based on the size of the room and the desired level of sound absorption. Large artworks such as the XXL (120x180) can absorb more sound than smaller formats.
